About the Jewelry Artist, Maureen King
and Her Unique Handcrafted Jewelry Designs
Long before my current endeavor as a jewelry designer, I was interested in artistic design. I worked as a graphic designer and dabbled in photography and interior design as hobbies. I even had a computer graphics business for several years. But it wasn’t until, at age 44, when I took an adult education class in Silversmithing for jewelry making, I finally discovered jewelry, the artistic outlet that had eluded me for so long. I left my hometown of Tucson and my business and moved to San Diego. Within a year my jewelry creations were juried into Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park and soon I was asked to join other artists as a partner in Studio 39.

I am not a jewelry designer’s designer…I don’t create jewelry to impress fellow jewelers. I am a very visual person, and I make jewelry pieces that please me. In my jewelry creation, I prefer jaspers to tourmaline, silver to gold, semi-precious to precious and, in my silver and mixed metal jewelry, i opt for primitive rather than polished. I have been mixing metals (such as silver, brass and copper) since my introduction to silversmithing and jewelry design.
I don’t follow jewelry trends because I don’t think most people are driven by trends when it comes to the jewelry they wear. I don't want them to wear a particular piece of jewelry for one season. I want them to love that jewelry for years. And I don’t just make jewelry I would wear. I make jewelry I think IS beautiful, believing that each original piece of jewelry is meant for someone…someone special!
My jewelry work is often described as “unique”, “unusual”, “different”, and yet “simple”. All adjectives that please me.
